Ground Broken for Long Term Care
The St. Ignace News, June 24, 2010 - Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace broke
ground on construction for its 48-bed, 29,900-square-foot long term care facility behind
the new hospital on North State Street Wednesday, June 9. To be funded by a $5 million
grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the project is expected
to be completed by November.
The project is managed by The Granger Group, a construction development company
based in Grand Rapids. As part of the hospital's agreement with the company, hiring
local construction companies for the project will be a top priority, said Ron Mitchell,
chairman of the hospital board.
The new long term care facility was designed by Bowers and Rein, an architecture firm
from Ann Arbor. The building will feature a center hall with a dining room, activity
center, beauty shop, and exercise room. It will also include an eight-foot-wide glass and
metal walkway connecting it to he hospital. Long term care residents currently occupy
the old hospital building on Burdette Street. The newly constructed hospital and tribal
health clinic opened on North State Street in April.
