Work to Begin on New City Hall/
Police Station
Lansing State Journal, Christie Bleck, September 27, 2009 - MASON - Shovels and hard
hats will be a common sight this Tuesday when groundbreaking takes
place for the new
city hall/police station.
A ceremony is planned for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the site of the new facility near Park
and Ash streets.
The city has chosen the Granger Group of Wyoming to design and construct the
$5.9-million project,
which is expected to be completed in June 2010.
The current city hall/police station is more than 30 years old and has insufficient space
for staff and
an aging infrastructure.
Work for the new facility, which will be about 26,000 square feet and have two stories
plus a
basement, will begin in the back parking lot this week.
Staff is removing items it will keep, such as bricks, benches, parking blocks and the
police
department shed.
William Goosen, Granger project manager, said there are many underground utilities
at
the site,
which have to be moved around carefully to not disturb city, police and
fire functions.
Designer Joe Ditonto said the new facility will have 79 parking spaces, with some existing
parking left
toward the back of the site by the pump house and tower. Parking will be
consolidated in one area, he
said.
Goosen said it will be a "tight site" during construction, but safe.
